Islamic youth camp at Harrow Central Mosque 'huge success'

Harrow children have been learning about Islam at a Ramadan youth camp organised by a group of graduates.

The six-day camp at Harrow Central Mosque in Station Road was organised by newly-qualified teacher Usman Choudhury, 22, and three friends in a bid to make Islamic teaching more fun for youngsters.

The group have put on a range of activities, including teaching the children between six and 13 years old how to use a daf – a drum used in Middle Eastern traditional music.

Mr Choudhury said: “It was one of my friend’s ideas to try to organise a youth camp around Ramadan to try and teach the kids basic Islamic stuff and try and make it a bit more fun.

“We started handing out flyers outside the mosque, and our plan was to get 50 children – but we ended up with 60 and a waiting list so it’s been a huge success.”

The camp started last Tuesday and runs between 10am and 4pm until Thursday.

It's a great initiative by Harrow Central Mosque which some of our other faith Groups might wish to emulate thereby benefitting our youth.

Even a six-day camp giving insights into Islam is an opportunity for others to find out more about the faith, during the Holy month of Ramadan.

There is nothing preventing any of our diverse faith groups from holding similar "taster camps",promoting understanding, leadin
g to enhanced harmony. Way to go!

@Sonoo Malkani: what's to 'emulate'? Christian churches have been running Holiday clubs in Harrow for as long (if not longer) as I can remember.

Wonderful!More power to our Churches as well!

ANYONE doing good work is worthy of congratulation. Why the nit-picking?

Please let us all try to be more large-hearted, respectful and charitable and watch how we speak with each other and about one another. This, hopeful
ly,will help towards keeping the community of Harrow "sweet".

One can always try and do better!
