Racist egg throwers in Golders Green ordered to pay victims compensation

Four men who pelted eggs at young Jewish people during racially motivated attacks in Golders Green have been ordered to pay compensation to their victims.

Mohammed Khalifa, 19, Aimen Mohamed, 19, Mohammed Jawad, 21, and Haider Al-Fardan, 21, carried out the attacks as they drove in Golders Green Road on December 9.

Willesden Magistrates Court heard how on that morning, Khalifa borrowed his father’s BMW before driving the other three to Kingsbury where they bought 30 eggs.

The men then headed to Golders Green where they singled out a group of four young girls at 11.30am.

As Khalifa slowed the car down, the men shouted “oi, Jews” and “Jews” while they drove past before throwing an egg, one of which hit a girl in the face.

As the girls continued down the road, the car drove back down the road and they were subjected to more shouting, though one of them was able to memorise the number plate. They also noticed more broken eggs on the road.

Fifteen minutes later, two 14-year-old boys were walking along the same road when the group drove slowly past them.

All the car windows on the passenger side were open and as the car pulled alongside the boys, the occupants yelled abuse at them with at least one voice shouting, “you f***ing Jews”.

At least three or four eggs were thrown, spattering the boys on their shoes and trousers.

The court decided after a two day trial that the behaviour had been motivated by the religion of the victims.

Khalifa, of St. Augustines Avenue, Wembley, Mohamed, of Broadhead Strand, Colindale, Jawad, of Blenheim Gardens, Wembley, and Al-Fardan, of Bush Grove, Colindale, were all found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment, alarm and distress by words and behaviour.

All four were ordered to pay £415 in fines, court costs and compensation to their victims.

Detective constable Damon Cotter, in charge of the investigation, said - "This criminal activity is totally unacceptable and shows a lack of respect and tolerance of other citizen’s religion.

The assault was not done on the spur of the moment, these young men planned their illegal and anti-social activity by purchasing a quantity of eggs with intent to harass Jewish people.”

Roughly about 4 years ago myself & my husband were walking along Brent Street in Hendon when something like this happened to us....

however it was NOT deemed racist by the police because although we were being shouted at by a group of youths in a car as it drove back & forth they were using their own language so we could not understand a word that was said but the actions of throwing Tomatoes & Eggs at us & other people on the street & laughing when we were hit should have been delt with by the law but the police just were not interested at all..

By the way myself & my Husband are White/ English & the louts throwing tomatoes & Eggs at us were actually JEWISH !!!!

In NO WAY am i condoning the acts of these four men ( who are clearly NOT English ) as what happened was disgusting & sickening.. No one should have been targeted at all for being religious especially youngsters !! It could have been bombs they were throwing or bricks instead of eggs !!!

I mealy mentioned my experience because i felt it imperative to point out that it is not just the Jewish faith that are targets alone !!!

I don't believe a word of it. Couldn't understand them because they were speaking their own language? Most Jews speak English. Were they wearing wide-brimmed hats?

It's a matter of great shame that we still have so many racists in our community--some overt and others covert --like the ones who have been hauled in by the Police and will no doubt be dealt with by the Courts.No one deserves to be treated in such a derogatory fashion.

Very sad that these young lads have such poisoned minds and pre-determined this criminal activity.Even more shameful they also picked on young girls.Surely they must have sisters,mums and other female members whom they love dearly and would not like them to be attacked in this vile fashion.In life,what goes round,comes round.They should beware!

Good job their number plate was noted.That's a very useful tip for community members who encounter crime of any sort.It is so important to get the colour,description,m
ake, model of the car and its registration so that the Police can get out and pick them off our streets.What a result!

We need to be pro-active and get in the habit of becoming more alert so that we help bust crimes.Get behind your police and make life hell for the criminals!

It does not matter what ethnic background you come from or what the colour of your skin is,what your social status is or anything else.

Black,White,Pakistan
i Jewish or whatever----how can we forget we are ALL part of the HUMAN RACE.

Sufficent that one human being hatefully tries to put down another and destroy the harmony which we all cherish.Have we learnt nothing from the Holocaust and other horrendous Wars?

Please, let us not bicker amongst ourselves but ,instead, unite and celebrate the fact that TODAY we take Racism VERY SERIOUSLY.The past is exactly that.We can learn from our errors but no use going in reverse.

Commissioner Hogan-Howe has made his views crystal clear.He will NOT TOLERATE any form of Racism or Hate Crime and has instructed the Metropolitan Police to get to grips with this disgraceful and soul-destroying activity.That is an excellent step forward in the fight against Racism.

It will never be possible to totally eradicate hatred of this kind but it is the duty of every single one of us to teach our young ones and also bear in our own minds what basic,decent human values are.Nobody is BORN a Racist.It is a learnt activity and conditioning.Please dont damage innocent minds and fill them with hatred.

Respect for one another and practising tolerance is the only way for us to keep our world peaceful.

Please let us do everything in our power to bring such dreadful crimes to an end.

Actually they were all wearing hats & although most Jews do speak English as you keenly point out they are also taught their own language from an early age !!

I am not really bothered if you believe it or not, i was simply mentioning an incident that occurred where the jewish members of our community were not the victims but the instigators !!

surfnutt i totally agree with you, had these four yobs been attacked like this by white youths they would have been yelling for prison sentences to be handed out not just fines !

The attack wasn't "racist".It was religiously motivated.As the Detective constable rightly points out:"This criminal activity is totally unacceptable and shows a lack of respect and tolerance of other citizen’s RELIGION."

mama mia 66. Most jews are taught ancient Hebrew from an early age but its use is usually restricted to prayer. Most jews communicate amongst themselves in English with the odd word of Yiddish thrown in for effect. Whoever was throwing eggs and tomatoes at you, they were unlikely to be jewish.

Point of order. This was not a RACIST attack. It is one religion attacking another. People of all races follow the Islamic religion. These men were attacking the Jewish girls because of there religion. The Quran tells Muslims that "In the eyes of Allah, non-Muslims (especially Jews) are the vilest of beasts" (8:55) Further more the 'Prophet and Messenger' of these Muslim youths spent the last 12 years of his life killing, enslaving and raping Jews. These lads were doing what their religion encourages them to do. I say again it is not racism it is religious intolerance.

I stand corrected when I called this an act of Racism but there's not a shred of doubt in my mind that this is an act of PROFOUND HATRED , which has fuelled this type of disgraceful behaviour.It is HATE CRIME and punishable under British law.

Are you saying that hating another's RELIGION is excusable and condonable.Whether its race,colour,religion
,sex ,or any other parameter which causes one human being to turn on another,I call it THOROUGHLY SHAMEFUL and TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

I fervently hope we will all wake up before it's too late and realise how damaging this is to the fabric of a civilised society.

This crime was prosecuted and the shameful miscreants dealt with and hopefully they will have learnt their lesson.

Before we descend into doom and gloom, we should read the other stories in the Harrow Times where people are cooperating and tolerant of each other for the common good.

Please would all those who have already commented or are seriously considering help by GENUINELY making some useful suggestions, as to how we might help those trying to enforce the law and those really working incredibly hard to bring these hate-filled subjects to book.

Kindly resist from making remarks which contribute nothing of value.Do apply your energies, instead, to making sensible and plausible suggestions.I am sure this will be much appreciated by those helping us fight Hate Crime.
