Controversial plans to develop an old pavilion into a new sports complex were given council backing this evening.

At a Harrow Council cabinet meeting, the authority gave its backing to the Whitchurch Consortium to build a two-storey complex to replace the old pavilion on the fields in Wemborough Road.

The plans were given support and the consortium are now commissioned to develop the sport and leisure facility.

Negotiations on the development agreement, service level agreement and lease terms will now commence and the outcome of negotiations will be reported back to the cabinet for approval.

Councillor Thaya Idaikkadar, portfolio holder for property and major contracts, said: “I think this is a wonderful development and I recommend it for council backing.

“We need to think of the needs of the entire borough and there is a significant need for high quality sporting facilities for our sportsmen and women, boys and girls.”

However during the meeting there were a number of questions from people campaigning against the plans about the effect the new facilities will have on those living near the new site.

Councillor Idaikkadar said proposals are still in their early stages. People will able to put their opinions forward during a consultation period, when the proposals go before the planning committee in the months ahead.
