A street is set to be overcrowded with “disastrous” traffic when a temporary free school opens in Wealdstone in September.

People living in Athlestone Road are also furious that they haven’t been consulted about the Avanti House schools location, which is to be in the Teachers Centre in Tudor Road.

Sheila Murphy, who lives in the road, said she is concerned the rush-hour traffic could potentially cause some fatal accident.

She said: “It’s going to cause a chaotic mix of traffic in the mornings and will be an absolute nightmare to get anywhere with no end of children being dropped off by car.

“It’s going to be very dangerous, we have a speed limit of 30mph but you still get people bombing down the road. It’s going to be an easy target for fatal accidents and an absolute nightmare.”

Ms Murphy also said she was appalled by the council’s “lack of apathy” in consulting residents around the area.

“It’s disgusting we haven’t been consulted because it’s already been rubber stamped so there’s nothing more that can be done. I feel very let down by my council.

“It’s no good saying that it’s only going to be a temporary school for a couple of years, because that’s still two years of our lives that it’s disrupting.”

Councillor Susan Hall agreed that the proposals were “concerning” and slammed the council for failing to do a proper consultation.

“I am terribly concerned about the location, because there’s going to be poor access to the school making the traffic situation an absolute nightmare.

“I applaud the council for opening a new free school, but it needs to be put in the right position with a proper location.”

A statement from Harrow Council said that everyone in the area had been sent a letter explaining the situation.

It added: "It is important to remember that the sitting of the school at the teacher's centre is a temporary measure for one year.

"As part of the planning process for a permanent solution, we will be carrying out a full consultation in the coming months which will look at issues such as traffic.

"This is a complex situation for the council as we try to balance the needs of local residents with the demands of parents wanting school places.”
