Eight people have been arrested after police confiscated £1 million of fake goods on sale at Wembley Market over the weekend.

The eight were bailed after police raided the market amid concerns unfair competition was having a “disastrous impact” on honest market stall holders.

Wembley Market, which runs on Sundays at Wembley stadium, has long had a problem with people selling fake goods.

Tokyngton Safer Neighbourhoods Team led a joint operation with Brent and Harrow trading standards, targeting the sellers of counterfeit goods at the market.

Undercover officers raided the market just before 9am on Sunday, conducting interviews until midnight.

Nine stalls were searched as part of the operation, during which 804 pairs of trainers, 2,862 articles of clothing, 695 handbags, 250 purses and 680 items of jewellery were seized, costing more than £1 million.

Bill Bilon, from Brent and Harrow's trading standards department, said: “This was one of the biggest and most successful operations we have conducted at Wembley market.”

He added that traders who persistently plagued the market with counterfeit goods would not be tolerated.

Sergeant Pete Goodchild, of Tokyngton Safer Neighbourhoods team, said: “The value of goods is quite amazing and it means a large amount of money has now been diverted away from criminal activity. We plan to conduct more of these operations in the near future.”
