ENFIELD Council has promised to improve its consultation around plans for the North Circular after accusations that not many people know about it.

The North Circular Area Action Plan will map out the future of areas of Bounds Green, Palmers Green, Bowes, and New Southgate, for the next couple of decades.

However, the council has come under fire for not doing enough to publicise it and engage with the public.

The Enfield Independent revealed yesterday that the plans were not publicised on the council's website and the document had not been put on display in all the libraries in the affected area.

Councillor Del Goddard, cabinet member for regeneration, has promised to improve access to the plans, but insisted the consultation, which finishes next month, will be widespread and exhaustive.

He said: “People who live in this area will have an opportunity to have their say and put their views across about the document.

“I am going to sort out the issue with the website, we want this to have the widest possible coverage.

“We don't want anyone to feel cut off, but this is not the final document and there will be plenty of bites of the cherry.”

Around 8,000 homes will be leafleted about the plans this month, and a public meeting and exhibition is planned for Saturday, February 4, to consult further.

Cllr Goddard admitted copies of the plan should have been put in local libraries and promised to fix that. The consultation is now publicised on the council's website.

The senior councillor also sought to quash fears that the council is planning to sell off Bowes Primary School for housing and move pupils to a newly-expanded Broomfield School.

The idea is in the North Circular Area Action Plan, prompting concerned parents to consider starting a petition against any merger.

But Cllr Goddard said the idea has now been dropped, and there are no plans to merge the two schools.
