AN APPEAL against a High Court decision to allow the closure of six libraries in Brent began this morning.

Brent Council announced plans to shut six of the 12 libraries in the borough in April.

Campaigners launched the Brent SOS (Save our Six) Libraries campaign against the closure of Preston, Barham Park, Tokyngton, Cricklewood, Kensal Rise and Neasden Libraries.

Brent SOS Libraries sought a judicial review arguing the decision was "flawed" claiming it failed to assess local needs and the impact of the closures. A three-day judicial review was held at the High Court in August.

Last month, a High Court decision ruled the libraries would not be saved and campaigners were told they could appeal against the ruling.

Two weeks ago, Lord Justice Elias said the process to hear the case in the Court of Appeal should be fast-tracked and the case will be heard at the Court of Appeal today and tomorrow.
