HARROW has the lowest smoking rate in London, new figures show.

Just 12 per cent of residents use cigarettes, compared to an average of 22 per cent across the country, and only 23 in every 100,000 people die of lung cancer, according to the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO).

Dr Andrew Howe, director of public heath at NHS Harrow, said smoking is the most common form cause of premature death and disease related to lifestyle.

He said: “We are pleased that the number of smokers in Harrow is reducing and that the rates of death from lung cancer are the lowest in London.

“However, more than 270 deaths in Harrow each year can be attributed to smoking and we cannot be complacent about the impact of smoking on people’s health and the cost to the NHS of treating people with smoking-related disease.

“Smoking not only affects your health but it hits your wallet too – a 20-a-day smoker will spend more than £2,000 each year on cigarettes.

“But, if you want to give up a habit that is also a major risk to your health, NHS Harrow’s Smokefree service is here to help.”

Harrow positive figures compare to a grim picture in Tower Hamlets, where 62 in every 100,000 people die from lung cancer, and Hackney, where 32 per cent of people smoke.
