A FAMILY church in Edmonton has donated four benches to the community to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

The King's House, in Pegamoid Road, handed the recycled plastic gifts over to Montagu Recreation Ground, in Montagu Road, on July 17.

Around 400 residents turned up to join in the celebrations, and were treated to a barbeque, music stalls, games and activities.

The occasion also raised money to help build a nursery school for the poorer residents of the Alajo community in Ghana.

Senior minister of the church, Reverend Tony Peters, said: “We are determined to ‘be’ the church, not just ‘do’ church, and the only way we can be the church is to engage with our community in meaningful ways.

"We believe that identifying needs in our community and helping to meet them is just one practical way to really engage.

"That was the idea behind the benches.”

Edmonton MP Andy Love officially handed over the benches to the community.

Speaking after the event, he said: “It’s great to see a local church making a substantial contribution to the welfare and life of the community in Edmonton.

"The family fun day always brings people together and the four benches will provide the local community with a lasting contribution.

"Let’s hope the sunny weather continues so we can enjoy them."
