Timely reminder of burglary risk for Dal Babu, borough commander for Harrow Police

This week I did something that I have not done for a little while, which was jumping over back garden fences to stop two suspects.

The two youths had been peering over a number of back garden fences along a back alleyway in South Harrow and I was immediately suspicious.

I flagged down a single patrolling officer, PC Mark Riding in his patrol car and we went and stopped these two young men and searched them.

It turned out that both young men had been arrested by police before. The two young men claimed they lived locally and that they were merely looking over the fences to look at how they could walk home along the alleyways. Their account of events was checked out and verified.

They were both warned about their behaviour and their details were stored on our criminal intelligence system.

This incident was a timely reminder that we need to secure our homes and we should remember that over 50% of burglaries are due to unlocked doors and open windows. This is particularly important in this heatwave.

The Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Asad Omar and I attended "One Ball, One Community" - a football event organised by Harrow Safer Neighbourhoods officers and Barnet Football Club at The Hive, the club's state of the art training ground at Camrose Avenue, Edgware.

Over 100 children from twelve schools took part in the competition and we are hoping this number will increase next year.

I had a meeting this week with PC Jamie Kay and PC Tony McGovern who work on a plain clothes unit, to thank them for an excellent piece of detective ability.

The officers arrested two robbers who had victimised local schoolboys.

The officers did very well - they only had a vague description from one of the victims but still managed to identify the suspects and arrest them.
