A WEALDSTONE mosque was celebrating last week after winning an interfaith cricket tournament.

The Sri Lankan Muslim Cultural Centre, in Whitefriars Avenue, snatched victory after a dramatic finish to the annual event, organised by Harrow Police to build links between the borough's diverse communities.

The scores were level at the end of the match but the team defeated Wood Lane Islamic Centre in a tense “bowl out”, similar to a penalty shoot out in football.

Players from both sides took it in turns to bowl one ball at the stumps with no batsman to defend them, and after no wickets in the first five rounds Mohamed Imtiyas claimed a sudden death victory for the Sri Lankans.

PCSO Imran Hayder, of Headstone South Safer Neighbourhoods Team, who organised the tournament, said: “This year's tournament has been a great success.

“We have been supported by all sectors of the community – I would particularly like to thank all the teams who participated.”
