SEVEN developers are competing for the contract to redevelop land around a historic airbase in Stanmore.

The firms have lodged bids with VSM Estates, which is managing the future of RAF Bentley Priory, and negotiations are underway, chairman of the Stanmore Society John Williams has revealed.

Mr Williams also told the residents' association's AGM last night that one of the seven firms is at an advanced stage of negotiation, and it is hoping to close out a deal before the end of June.

The future of Bentley Priory, a former luxury hotel and home during World War Two of Fighter Command, has been in doubt since March last year when plans for flats and houses on the site had to be shelved when the recession hit the property market.

But the Harrow Times reported in March this year how the site had gone back on the market, renewing hopes for the preservation of the former airbase.

If the land is sold, it will pave the way for a Battle of Britain museum to be created in the house itself, preserving the building where Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding masterminded the Battle of Britain victory in 1940.

The Grade II* listed building, off The Common, is considered by many residents as jewel in the crown of the borough, and the Harrow Times has supported efforts by the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust to ensure the historic site is preserved for generations to come.
