HARROW Council has launched a campaign to stop football-related domestic violence during this summer's World Cup.

Posters have gone up in the borough's pubs and bars to highlight the links between heavy drinking during football games and attacks in the home.

Statistics show domestic violence surged by 31 per cent across the UK during the World Cup in 2006, especially around the time England games were played.

Councillor Margaret Davine, who is in charge of adult social care, health and well-being in Harrow, said: "We want everyone in Harrow to enjoy the World Cup, but it's a sad statistic that sporting tension and excessive drinking can spill over into domestic violence.

"I am very happy to support this campaign and urge fans to drink responsibly, so nothing spoils what should be a great celebration of sport."

The campaign follows a warning by the Association of Chief Police Officers that domestic violence could increase during the month-long tournament.

England will kick off their campaign this Saturday with a game against USA.

Victims of domestic violence in Harrow can call an independent domestic violence adviser on 0208 863 9583 for help and assistance.

Anyone dealing with drug and alcohol problems can also contact support services on 0203 008 8270, or 0208 861 3884 for help.
