Harrow Labour's Hindu row continues as forum founder Kanti Patel hits back

A HINDU who defected from the Labour Party has responded angrily to suggestions he is not a community leader.

Kanti Patel was pictured on a Labour leaflet as the representative of the Hindu Forum but following his switch of allegiance senior party figures disputed claims he was a founding member of the organisation.

Navin Shah, London Assembly member for Brent and Harrow, branded him “bitter” and suggested he was seeking revenge after not being selected to represent a safe seat.

Mr Patel said: “I'm not bitter, I'm very upset by what he said. I'm not taking revenge, we don't take revenge.

“I'm not upset because I've not been selected but because of the way they've treated the people of the community. They haven't delivered anything.”

Mr Patel has not joined the Conservative Party but says he will vote for their Hindu candidates and has been out canvassing with the party.

He pointed to a manifesto for the forum drawn up by Tony McNulty, Labour candidate for Harrow East, and said the only goals that have been met were achieved by the Tories.

These included the state-funded Krishna Avanti Primary School, in Edgware, which opened in 2008 under Harrow Council's Tory administration and a move to make school dinners Hindu friendly.

But Mr Shah defended his remarks and his party's record with the religious community, saying the Hindu school project was initiated under Labour and simply granted planning approval by the Conservatives.

He said: “I understand he's upset but to be honest he's got to blame himself. He's thrown wobblies before on a number of occasions. This time he's walked away and that's fine with me.”

The Conservative party has also responded to claims by Mr Shah that Hindu candidates were being chosen by the party out of “tokenism” rather than due to their abilities.

Brian Jones, chairman of the Harrow East Conservative Association, said: “Cllr Shah clearly finds it difficult to accept that many who may have thought of the Labour party as their natural home politically over recent decades now find that not to be the case and are turning to the Conservatives whom they recognise to be the true promoters of personal freedom.

“Who enable people to succeed if they really want to do so and generally are the custodians of traditional values.

“I can assure everyone that is why all the Conservative candidates selected to stand for Harrow Council at this election from this constituency are there because of their own aspirations for the community as a whole.”

I wonder if Mr Jones chairman of the Harrow East Conservatives was one of those who tried to de-select Bob Blackman in 2008 from his own party for under achieving and poor performance?

Why only vote for 'Hindu' candidates? Surely people should vote on the merits of each candidate.

This kind of ethnic and religious parcelling of votes is partisan, divisive, and will lead to more segregation.

Alarm bells ring! It would be better if Kanti Patel were campaigning for the Conservative Party and not just their Hindu candidates. Parties have different philosophies and right thinking people support parties after checking out what they stand for. The Labour Party is probably better off without Kanti Patel who does not seem to understand that the Conservatives have been running Harrow Council since 2006 and therefore had the mandate from the people of Harrow to 'do' things. Do you complain that the passenger in a car is not steering the car?! He is not behind the steeing wheel!!! The Conservatives are welcome to Kanti Patel's brand of democratic engagement

I agree, this palaver on which the Harrow Conservatives are trying to cash on politically is frankly ludicrous!

Mr Patel or any one for that matter should not be holding any party to ransom based on his affiliation with any community be it Hindu or any other. It should be based on who is the best candidate – on merit – something Mr Patel and Conservative do not seem to understand and I can bet my bottom shilling that it will eventually create big problems and ripples in local Conservative Party.

Navin Shah, how can you say Kanti Patel is a bitter man? As you are fully aware of, Kanti Patel has loyally supported Labour Party over the years. He has spent countless hours canvasing during the elections on the premise given by the Party that they would deliver on their promises to the community, which even Mr McNaulty knows. However, yet again, the Party has failed to keep their promises. Therefore, I ask you, who has betrayed whom?

I recall Navin Shah referred to Bob during GLA election as "3 job Bob", the sole reason Bob could not do his job to represent Brent and Harrow.
Navin stated if he was elected he would give his 100% to GLA.
Now let's see, Navin , still has is architects practices, the GLA seat and he is yet again standing in Kenton East Ward as Councillor. So we now have "3 job Navin".
Question for the voter is who is betraying the community, Kanti a community leader or Navin.
