A FORMER Doctor Who star has died at Northwick Park Hospital.

Anthony Ainley, who lived in Ennerdale Drive, Kingsbury, played the Doctor's arch-enemy The Master, appearing in ten stories between 1981 and 1989.

He had already enjoyed a successful TV career spanning three decades before succeeding Roger Delgado in the role, but it is as the Doctor's nemesis that he is best remembered.

Anthony found fame as Detective Sergeant Hunter in It's Dark Outside (1965) before moving on to the comedy thriller Spyder's Web (1972). During the 1970s, he appeared in Elizabeth R, Upstairs Downstairs, The Pallisers, Nicholas Nickelby and Lillie.

Born in 1932, he was destined to be an actor. His father, Henry, was well-known on the West End stage, and his brother, Richard, appeared in Hollywood films.

His other passion was cricket, and he played for the London Theatres Cricket Club for more than 30 years. He never married, saying he valued his independence too much.
