Grit delivery late raises fears of transport chaos in Harrow

1,000 of grit ordered by Harrow Council has not arrived yet. 1,000 of grit ordered by Harrow Council has not arrived yet.

HARROW could be left “high and dry” in freezing conditions if a shipment of grit ordered last month does not arrive.

Harrow Council has stockpiled 650 tonnes of salt, enough to constantly distribute on the borough's roads if snow continues to fall over the next four days.

However, another 1,000 tonnes order in December by council chiefs has failed to arrive, leaving the borough's roads potentially vulnerable if the freezing conditions continue.

Councillor Susan Hall, deputy leader of the council, said: “We had ordered 1,000 tonnes of extra salt for this month but the supplier has so far not come up with it, which has basically left us high and dry.

"We'll do what we can, but if salt suppliers don't honour their obligations, it doesn't leave us much room for manoeuvre."

Gritting teams are due to hit the roads this evening from 10pm ahead of expected heavy snowfall across Greater London and the South East overnight.

If the snowfall and freeezing conditions are light, the gritting stocks could last as long as a fortnight.

Schools will judge tomorrow morning whether they can open for the day, and special needs transport teams will similar assess whether they can operate in adverse conditions.

Only thought about ordering in DECEMBER?? Beggars belief, did no one think about this before (FYI winter comes every year it's not a new phenomenon). I make sure my winter oil is IN MY TANK BEFORE winter. I also get my mower sharpened during the early part of winter not wait until just before the grass starts to grow! To leave ordering until December sound foolhardy at least, (some may even suggest incompetent).

Surely Harrow Council did not leave it until December to order grit??

or did they think they would get away with ordering less and save money ?

Susan Hall has made another misjudgement first the demonsrations, next neighbourhood snoopers now no grit for Harrow.

The order put through in December was for EXTRA supplies. I suspect that the 650 tonnes already available would be enought for an "ordinary" winter cold snap. Would you really rather the Council spent your council tax on EXTRA supplies, which may not be needed and cost your money to store, in September? No doubt you would all complain if the Council did this that they were wasting money!!! There's no pleasing some people!

The normally accepted process is to plan for a 1 in 50 winter, all agencies work to this plan. We would be in deep trouble if everyone planned for an "ordinary winter". No gas, no electricity, hospitals full. It's not rocket science, just competence!

Bob345 even you would agree that this is not a 1 in 50 type of weather. Your post suggests that even if this was an "ordinary" winter we would all be in deep trouble, which clearly we are not. Further, once this severity of weather hits it is central government which decides where the grit should go based on need, irrespective of how much individual councils have ordered and when.
