The message was very clear

September 11 will now be remembered as the day the people of Harrow prevented the fascists and Nazis, from marching.

It is the day that Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Christians, men, women, gays, trade unionists, old and young, all stood together in the street and asserted that “they shall not pass”. Nor did they.

In defending the mosque, we defended all the synagogues, temples and churches from the threat of racist attacks.

In preventing the fascists and racists from being able to hold their provocative “static demonstration”, we the people of Harrow stood together in the best traditions of the anti-fascist movement and asserted that “they shall not pass”. Nor did they.

Speakers at the rally included: Weyman Bennet and Lee Jasper from Unite Against Fascism, a speaker from Harrow Mosque, the leaders of the Labour and the Conservative groups on Harrow Council, Tony McNulty MP; the UNITE convenor from the local bus garage, the National Union of Teachers and the local Green Party.

Messages of support were received from Ken Livingstone, Councillor Navin Shah, and the bishop of Willesden. All reiterated the message that Harrow is, and will remain, a united multicultural, multiracial and multireligious community. We, the people, will not allow the racists to run amok in our town to threaten, insult and attack us.

A motley crew of, at most, 20 racists and fascists attempted to march from the Harrow and Wealdstone station end. But hardly had they got in sight of the mosque before they were chased off by the youth, who were then taken into protective custody by the police and driven away in a prison van. So embarrassed were the “English Defence League” by the pathetic turnout that they claimed to have called off their “rally” beforehand. More than 2,000 anti-fascists held the streets and defended the mosque. The promise of police protection was not needed, nor did it appear. Instead the riot squad were out in their normal provocative manner, with shields and batons ready. From 1.30pm to 8pm, the streets were peaceful, with unity, chanting and speeches.

There was much discussion as to whether the streets should be occupied by the anti-fascists, or whether traffic should be allowed to flow freely. Quite clearly the argument was understood by the vast majority that it was our street, and not for the fascists and racists to be allowed to march on.

The Brent and Harrow Unite Against Fascism group was formed six weeks ago, when we first noticed the threat from the EDL. Since then, we tirelessly handed out leaflets, held regular street stalls and contacted as many local groups as possible. Thousands of leaflets and posters were issued, with hundreds of names collected for a petition showing support for the mosque. A delegation then handed in this petition of support to the mosque committee on Friday to show the community is one.

In Luton the EDL ran riot; in Birmingham they were sent packing; in Harrow they were chased away with a clear message, not welcome. Now the BBC plans to allow Nick Griffin to take part in Question Time on TV on the grounds that the BNP is a legitimate political party.

We should not allow them to peddle their racist filth and incite attacks on people because of their skin colour or their religion. The BBC should reverse the decision.

The victory of the anti-fascist, anti-racist movement in Harrow now requires that the left, trade unionists, socialists and youth groups all come together to pursue an electoral arrangement to ensure that, as a matter of urgency, we defeat the BNP and other fascist organisations.

The fact that Mr Filer of 'Brent and Harrow Unite Against Facism' managed to spell 'Fascism' wrong, serves as an indication to the calibre of this letter.

The defence of the Harrow community from fascists was correct, as was his spelling.

Leon - I don't know what to say. The inaneness of your comment has confused me. Mr Filer of 'Brent and Harrow Unite Against Facism', has quite clearly spelt 'Fascism' as 'Facism'. I believe thit if you go to any dictionary, you will find that this is incorrect.

Do check before you criticise.

Perhaps one should learn to read before adding comments.

And in response to your request for a comment on content before spelling, I have already written a letter to the Harrow Times in response to Mr Filer's account of events.

The defence of the Harrow community from facists was misguided (just ask the mosque's spokesperson), as, sadly, was Mr Filer's spelling.

Mr Gramsci, I also notice that in an earlier post of yours: http://www.thisisloc

You manage to spell it 'Fasism', which perhaps explains your confusion regarding spelling.

Oh if only that were the case as the leter states. Sadly despite best efforts by the police and many others, it was shambolic chaos with a lot of pent up issues and negative feelings bubbling over. There was nothing dignified or noble about it. It was embarrassing, shocking and deeply worrying for anyone who lives around here. A lid on hatred and resentment has been lifted. A lid that would be better closed forever.

Seeing as the Harrow Times chose not to publish my letter in response to Mr Filer (sense? much too controversial), and for the benefit or Mr Gramsci, please find below my response in full...

In response to Mr Alf Filer’s letter in last week’s Harrow Times

Before he gets carried away, Mr Filer would do well to remember that, much to his disappointment, September 11th will not be remembered ‘as the day the people of Harrow prevented the fascists and Nazis from marching’ – that particular event will undoubtedly fade into obscurity – it will in reality always be remembered as the day nineteen young Islamists perverted their own religion, hijacked four commercial airliners and flew them into the world trade centre, killing 2,974 innocent civilians in the process. It was an event which will always serve as an obvious warning against the manipulation of religion for violent causes, a habit sadly reflected in the violence witnessed in Harrow on Friday.

Mr Filer’s sense of self-importance is remarkable; not only does he claim that he and his fellow protestors are responsible for the realigning of 9/11 in the nation’s memory, he also takes full accountability for ‘defending’ the mosque, (against the wishes of the Mosque’s guest speaker, Ajmal Masroor, who urged the faithful to ‘leave the police to do their job’). Mr Filer goes further; not only did he and his violent vanguard ‘defend’ the Mosque, but in the process they apparently also ‘defended all the synagogues, temples and churches from the threat of racist attacks’ - quite a day’s work.

This letter is not designed solely as a rebuke to Mr Filer’s sensationalist rhetoric and fanciful story-telling; it carries with it an important message about the dangerous defence of extremism and religious violence in the name of fighting racism.

Described in this paper by Cllr Jeremy Zeid as ‘an intolerant, vicious and malignant’ organisation, ‘who attach themselves leechlike to any “cause”’, Unite Against Fascism, of which Mr Filer is an active member, appear to be prepared to defend violence as long as it is not conducted against an ethnic or religious minority.

In their own report of events outside Harrow Mosque they state: ‘there were sporadic clashes when small groups of racists attempted to get near the mosque...UAF believes the blame for these incidents lies firmly with the racists trying to intimidate Muslims, not with the youths trying to protect their community.’ Not satisfied with apportioning all blame to the largely absent ‘English Defence League’, or ‘Stop the Islamification of Europe’, Mr Filer goes as far as to insinuate that the ‘provocative’ police were in some way to blame, a statement at odds with Cllr Susan Hall’s praise of the police as ‘courteous and calm despite being pelted with bottles and stones.’ ‘They couldn’t have handled it better’ she continued.

That an organisation chaired by an ex-mayor of London deems it acceptable to attempt to justify any form of violence from any section of society is appalling, and should serve as a clear indictment of exactly the kind of organisation it is.

For all his use of collective pronouns, Mr Filer will be disappointed to realise that the events in Harrow were not a symbol of unity or solidarity; they were not a community coming together; they were not ‘the people of Harrow’ standing as one. In truth, they were an example of mob violence, conducted by Muslim youth who largely travelled from outside the area, aided and abetted by UAF.

At a time when it is becoming increasingly important to stand up and unite against both the rise of the far right and the perversion of religion for violent and extremist agendas, it is disappointing to read about the naive opinions of a supposedly mainstream organisation like Unite Against Fascism.

As much as Mr Filer would like to believe otherwise, Friday’s protests were nothing more than a victory for the far right in its quest to divide through misunderstanding and fear. The UAF’s defence of violent elements within the Muslim community only serves as a cover for the insidious spread of extremism and gives an excuse for the BNP to peddle its racist ideologies.
