POLICE believe an 85-year-old man may have fallen or lost control of his mobility scooter before being hit by a lorry today.

The pensioner is in a critical condition after the hit-and-run, outside Pizza Express in the Broadway, Stanmore, at around 1.15pm.

Officers believe he was on the pavement before the incident but was hit by the vehicle in the road after falling or losing control of the scooter.

He was airlifted to an east London hospital and his next of kin have been informed.

Nearby roads were closed after the crash but all were open again by around 7.40pm.

The lorry did not stop at the scene but was tracked down shortly after the incident, and earlier today police questioned the driver over whether he knew he had hit the man.

No arrests have been made.

Officers from Alperton Collision Investigation Unit are investigating and anyone with information can contact them on 0208 998 5319, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
