A HOSPITALS trust has racked up a multi-million pound deficit in the first two months of the financial year.

North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Northwick Park and Central Middlesex, is facing a £4.5m overspend and has already failed to meet government financial targets for 2009 as a result.

The organisation expected to run £4m into deficit in April and May but a decline in income has left expenditure outstripping that target by £500,000.

The trust is fighting to save £17m over the course of the year and still does not know where £2.5m of that money will come from.

North West London has applied for money from the Strategic Health Authority (SHA) to help with its deficit and the first payment was expected in June.

But a report presented to the board of directors warns that if support from the SHA is not forthcoming it could slip behind on payments to suppliers.

Details of its financial position at the end of last month will be presented at a meeting of the board of directors on July 29.
