Planners approved the development of a 19-storey tower block in Colindale last night.
The development will consist of 460 self-contained flats, a warehouse and shops including a garden centre.
It would be made up of two seperate blocks varying in height, mostly at six storeys but rising to 19 storeys at its peak.
The site is currently occupied by two large retail warehouse buildings, one of which is a Wickes DIY store and the other empty.
A report by the Greater London Authority states the redevelopment is in line with planning policies but raised a number of oustanding issues that need to be addressed, including the affordable housing element.
As the proposal stands, 36 per cent of the flats would be available for low-cost rent or joint ownership schemes.
Brent councillors approved the proposal on the condition that the developer spends £2.5 million on education and transport improvements, to offset the impact the flats will have on infrastructure.
It will also be subject to further conditions from the Mayor of London's office, which may involve negotiations on the affordable element of the scheme.
