STAFF at one of Harrow's tube stations have been voted best in London at a prestigious awards ceremony.

North Harrow Station won Customer Service Team of the Year at the sixth-annual London Transport Awards, held on Wednesday.

The award was voted for by members of the public, and North Harrow is the first outside zone one to receive the accolade.

James Bond, who works in the station's ticket office, attended the award ceremony in Hammersmith with his colleagues.

He said: “This award is recognition for the way the station is run, which is to put the needs and aspirations of the passengers first and foremost.

“I cannot begin to describe the pride that I and my colleagues feel knowing that our station has been voted the best in London.

“I want to thank all the passengers who voted for us from the bottom of my heart and the greatest thrill is being able to share our success with them to.”

Mr Bond led a campaign against proposals to close the ticket office at the station along with dozens across the capital.

Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone wanted to shut the ticket offices, but at North Harrow a high profile and well-supported campaign opposed the proposals every step of the way.

Eventually, after months of protests and several petitions, the plans were scrapped by incoming mayor Boris Johnson.

Brent Council was another winner at Wednesday's transport awards, as it was recognised for improving the borough's transport network.

Particularly achievements recognised were 300 new cycle parking stands, upgraded walking routes, and a dramatic cut in the number of people killed or injured on Brent's roads.
