Nower Hill pupils learn about music business

STUDENTS at a school in Pinner celebrated the end of a ten-week music programme piloted at their school.

Pupils from Nower Hill School marked the end of the Young Enterprise QuickStart Music programme on Wednesday, January 28, with a series of events and concerts.

The students spent ten weeks raising money, carrying out market research and talent scouting as part of the programme aimed at making young people more aware of business techniques.

The students, aged 13 to 15, split into four companies to take on a range of music industry functions including creating a record label, artist management, music publishing and promotions.

The companies explored various areas of the music industry, raised capital to finance their companies and found out about hurdles to overcome such as royalties and intellectual property.

They also carried out market research amongst consumers and identified and selected talent for their music event.

Laura Marks, TV presenter and winner of the Great Scot Award for Music/Entertainment 2006, said: "Programmes like QuickStart Music provide such a good opportunity for young people to learn more about the music industry.

"Lots of people think the industry is just about the person singing or the band performing, but in reality it's the hundreds of people behind the scenes who make it all happen".

Andrew Grimley, development and communications director for Young Enterprise, said: "Our hope is that QuickStart Music excites and engages young people, and who knows, it may help to shape the next generation of young music entrepreneurs".
