Police crackdown on drink drivers

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to try to stop people drink driving during the festive period.

Met Police officers across the capital started a month-long crackdown on drink and drug drivers, starting from today.

They are planning to increase the number of breathaliser tests conducted to try to deter people who are thinking of driving while over the limit.

They will also be carrying out Field Impairment Tests, which assess the driver's balance, coordination and reaction to spot if they are under the influence of drugs.

Superintendent Michelle Husk, from the Met's Traffic Unit, said: "Drink and drug drivers may think it's harmless to drive home after a few drinks, but in fact, they are putting other people's lives at risk as well as their own.

"Every year I see the lasting and devastating consequences of drink and drug driving on the lives of many individuals and their families.

"Unfortunately Christmas is a period when people are more vulnerable to the risks of drink and drug driving, which is why we are carrying out this increased enforcement and trying to raise greater awareness.”
