THE Conservative's defeat in tonight's London Assembly election in Brent and Harrow has been blamed on internal divisions.
Merrick Cockell, Conservative and Chairman of London Councils, said Bob Blackman was defeated because of differences within Brent Conservatives.
He said: "It has not been a united Conservative party in that area.
"Internal divisions have certainly had an effect, and if you are not pulling together, defeat is what happens."
Cllr Blackman was defeated by Labour challenger Navin Shah, who beat him by 1,649 votes to take the seat on the assembly represnting Brent and Harrow.
This is the only defeat for the Conservatives so far in the London elections, and goes again the trend across the city.
Cllr Blackman will continue as deputy leader of Brent Council and leader of the Conservative councillors in the borough.
