TORY politicians have slammed Harrow's Labour MPs for voting with the Government on Post Office closures.

Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, and Tony McNulty, MP for Harrow East, voted down a Conservative motion calling for the Government to suspend plans to close.

Dr Rachel Joyce, the Tory candidate for Harrow West, said: "This is totally hypocritical and totally unnecessary. These MPs seem to have it in for Harrow. "They have done nothing to secure a decent grant for Harrow, voting in favour of one of the worst grant settlements.

"They imply that they are supporting local services, but when they are in Westminster, they vote in favour of government policies that are at the expense of Harrow such as their disgraceful action in favour of post office closures".

Councillor Jeremy Zeid, for Kenton West ward, accused both MPs of backtracking, claiming they had previously supported calls to save branches in the borough.

He said: "They should have actually been honest and said look, they need to close'. Or they should have said we need the post offices, they're a useful lifeline for local communities.

"Personally I think they should be able to sink or swim on their own."

Mr Thomas defended his position, saying he did not see voting with the government as inconsistent with opposing the closure of specific Harrow branches. He said he made his support for keeping the Harrow-on-the-Hill branch open in a public meeting on Friday, March 14.

He said: "Post Office Ltd has to make some difficult decisions but it has to make them based on accurate information.

"That's not inconsistent with recognising that tough decisions have to be made."

Mr Thomas also said it is unsustainable for Post Office Ltd to keep branches open if they have been losing large amounts of money each week.

He said Harrow Council should take over branches in the borough. The Harrow Times requested a response from Tony McNulty but had not recieved one at the time of publication.
