King agrees Latics switch

MARLON KING completed his move away from Vicarage Road today, joining Wigan Athletic on a three-and-half-year contract.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce tried to sign King in the summer when in charge of Birmingham, but he finally got his man this afternoon after Watford accepted a bid of £3m rising to £4m.

King would ideally have liked to have joined Fulham and remained in the south east of England, but his chances of remaining a Premiership player next season appear to have increased by joining the Latics.

"I just spoke to Steve Bruce and he made me feel very welcome," said King.

"You look at the Wigan team and they have got a good chance of survival, and there is not much more to say than that."

Added the 27-year-old: "I had been speaking to Fulham for the last week-and-a-half and for whatever reason it didn't happen. Steve Bruce made it clear he wanted me and I'm a Wigan player now."

King's replacement, Collins John, put the finishing touches to his loan move to Vicarage Road today and will join the Hornets on a permanent basis in the summer if they win promotion.

Armed with the proceeds from the sale of King, Aidy Boothroyd will step up his bid to land a deep-lying central midfielder and a centre-half before the window closes.

Good luck to Marlon (and his great wage packet - to be fair we would all move for 20k more!)

Lets hope Aidy gets this money to spend on new players like the mold of Sadler rather than more Kabba/Williamson type signings!

Hopefully the board and Aidy can learn to be better at PR after the farce of saying King was not going and then saying he wanted to leave etc.

Lets all move on and support the current Watford players!

Thank goodness its over and can get back to hopefully buying more players and I reckon Marlon rejected Fulham himself having seen the league table!

I am not surprised the board were keen to get rid of Marlon with him on 25k a week!

Lets hope they give Boothroyd money to spend like he has already rather than worry about ground development at the moment.

Wow what a suprise....Marlon passed the Wigan Medical, mind you the next thing to be wrote would be KA suggests it wasn't as stringent as the Fulham one!
Good luck to Marlon, now we can all move on.
I really don't think Marlon turned Fulham down, I think FFC wanted a reduced fee because they have bid on to many players!
Hopefully Boothroyd will use the cash to get a decent midfielder.
I await Colin's latest pathetic input, as well as Pessimist's!
You can't complain about selling a wooden legged player with only 3 years left for 4.5m now can u?
Hows the wedding plans going Colin & Pessi?
Just need to approach tomorrows game positively and get into next round of FA cup!

There realy a rugby town, the club is no bigger in fan base or attendance then ours!
I thought Marlon would do better then Wigan or Fulham, but he'll use it as a spring-board to a Mid table prem side in a year or two!
It's rough there but if they pay crazy wages, I suppose you take it!

Mark Duffy - if the stories about King's knee were as utterly incorrect as you say (and of course, you must be right), why don't King and the club sue?

If the stories were as damaging as you say they were, they'd have a great case.

And I'm someone who wants to cause unrest, eh?

What about the chairman of the club, who's programme notes put the boot into King before the deal was complete?

It's a good job Wigan took him because the chairman (who, of course, wasn't causing unrest with his comments) rodgered any chance of him ever coming back to play for Watford.

You do realise, Mark, that fans of clubs can have opposing views?

And that just because I, and others, make contrary comments, we are not 'spanners' (crikey, I haven't heard that as an insult since junior school).

I just don't see what there is to apologise for. Fulham found something in King's medical that made them decide they wanted to lower their bid.

I don't know what that was, nor do you. But something stopped that move from being completed.

Whether Wigan found anything, something or nothing when they did a medical, again, none of us know.

But they've decided to sign him - although because of the 'undisclosed' fee, we'll never know what they paid. But my guess (and it is only that) is that it's less than £5m and probably in instalments of some kind.

By the way, I am a fan, have been for 31 years. Home and away. But that doesn't mean I have to like everything the club does or says. And I have the right to express my opinions - as you do. But the name calling and aggressiveness - unnecessary if you ask me.

As for Farmer Giles - nice one Gordon Kelly. It's the capital letters that give you away.

What a bunch of unthinking clapper clones you all are....this time last week, outrage, this week, resignation.

The clubs propaganda machine has you all firmly in its grip.

Let me make one thing clear: I thought Marlon was overrated. He did, after all, have only one decent season under his belt. What disgusts me is the boards willingness to sell off any player once the "right" offer comes along, and then lay the blame on the player himself. I'm also concerned by the message this sends out to the players in the team and to players thinking of signing for the club, not to mention our so called "promotion rivals".

I may have been critical of King, but I certainly refrained from castigating him publicly last week, unlike some of you so-called "true" fans.

I'll come clean: I despise Boothroyd. He is nothing more than an ambitious careerist who is using this club for his own ends, whilst remaining a business agent for Simpson and Ashton.

C'mon folks, these two guys do not have the best interests of WFC at heart, they are motivated simply by self interest, nothing more.

Boofers is ruthless, incompetent, insecure people always are. So is Simpson. They have sold you an escape fantasy of 2010 and you have all bought blindly into it.

I have followed Watford for 23 years, and I have seen a lot of players, managers and directors go. Never have I felt such revulsion towards the leadership of the club as I do towards this lot.

Boothroyd is a fraud. He knows all the right things to say, but when it comes to managing a football team he has been found badly wanting; he isn't the next Graham Taylor, but rather the next Dave Bassett: just look at the shapelessness of the team for goodness sake.

He got lucky with some very good players two years ago, but now all those players are gone.

And as for my predictions, I think you'll find some of them have been fairly accurate.

As for inconsistency watcher, would you like to give us your true identity or are you too much of a gutless coward?

You're all setting yourself up for massive dissapointment of you think this manager will take the club up.

Mark, Watford says...
9:36pm Fri 25 Jan 08

Oh dear...here is Colin with his personal attack on Aidy.

I know Aidy has got a few issues with regard to his management as pointed out by many sane and realistic fans but you make it sound like he has nicked your wife or done some other dreadful crime.

Nothing wrong with a bit of ambition (although I personally think anyone who beleive that stuff about 2010 its totally daft or silly)

Would you rather he said I want to be here for ever sitting in the Championship?

So King is "over-rated" (and on a lot of money for a club like us) but then you moan about selling when the right offer comes..well 5 million for a player aged 27 and with an iffy knee who has had one good season as you state seems pretty decent!

BTW I seem to remember a few comments in "public" about him being fat/overweight etc.

Fine have an opinon and maybe it does send out the wrong message although from what I have heard Marlon who no angel in the dressing room but don't start appearing to contradict yourself...

Maybe you don't mean it but it seems that way in parts of your ramble.

Maybe you are right about Mr Simpson and more so Ashton but then its only what many think and know that they are running the club as business and don't like any negative press.

What a bunch of hypocrites some of you are, slagging off the Watford Observer and yet using their website to voice your crap.
As for Marlon, did no one notice when at the start of this season, the club came out with the good news that he had signed a new contract. Only to discover that it was for exactly the same length (finishing at the end of next season) but for another 15K more a week. seasons. He never had any intention of staying with the club, who had picked him up out of the gutter and seen him through a serious injury, he was only using our club for his own ambition.
I for one am glad to see the back of the greedy git.

>all the best marlon you were a legend....<

Such absurd comments are one of the reasons I virtually gave up on football some considerable time ago. A legend? A player barely anybody outside a little club called Watford has ever heard of?
Stanley Matthews was a legend. Tom Finney was a legend. Jackie Milburn was a legend. Bobby Moore was a legend. Johnny Haynes was a legend. George Best was a legend. Bobby Charlton was a legend. Jimmy Greaves was a legend. Alan Ball was a legend. Gordon Banks was a legend. Geoff Hurst was a legend.
These were all players with 100 times the ability and charisma of young what's-his-name and who only ever earned a fraction of his obscene wages.
Words like "legend" are bandied around far too easily these days and applied to the mundane hoofers of a bag of wind round a field.

this is getting ridiculous. facts are:
1. marlon wanted to leave
2. simpson held out for the best price possible
3. fulham used the knee as an excuse to lower the price and re-negotiate
4. simpson held out and got a better offer from wigan
5. king has gone to wigan after declaring he couldn't wait to go to fulham!

let's face it, it's all about the money

so how exactly has the board not acted in the best interests of the club? if you ask me we've held out for a great deal, which allows aidy to bring in a midfielder and cj. king's past it - i guarantee, he will be very average at wigan who are no better than us.

But being offensive? Does that really make you right? Is using four-letter names the best and only way to win an argument?

What next? Your dad is bigger than mine?

Could King not sue for libel?

Of course, I know nothing about law. You've told me that.

But I had a little look at the Liberty website - you know, the well-known independent human rights organisation?

They state that: "In libel claims, the claimant does not have to prove that he or she has suffered loss or damage as a result of the publication."

So, just to quote your earlier post: "The reason Marlon does not sue is he has suffered no loss therefore no claim for damages".

But Liberty, who on their homepage state that their website is "is written by expert lawyers", are wrong as well.

Well, fancy that.

Of course, the expert at Liberty who that wrote the section about the laws of defamation is, I assume, also (to quote you) a "KNOB" who knows "Bugger all" about the law.

Yet again the Village Idiot from St Albans has his weekly whinge. You say that you have followed Watford for 23 years, but I note the lack of the word support in that statement. These kind of sites are all about opinions, but with your great knowledge of the game (as you see it), the club not buying the likes of Folwer and Hasslebank I have to question just how much tactically you really do know about the world of football? You have made some very good points on posts before, but these moments of reason are always spoiled by an immature attack on the manager. I like the guy, and if you don't then fair enough, but you would earn a little more respect on these boards (currently I think you have absolutely none) if you kept your personal issues out. Food for thought over King Transfer

makes you wonder if Fulham had not come in for him, whether he would be joining Wigan at all. If Wigan and not Fulham come in for him in first place, would he even of considered a move to Wigan ???? The developments of past two weeks have forced all parties into a move, so when Fulham didnt want him, he had to go somewhere quick, but i doubt he would of joined Wigan had the circumstances been different. My thoughts behind this are ...

Wigan, way up North, a million light years to the comfort of his mansion in Boxmoor. Maybe he will move to wilmslow but near Wigan hardly paradise. Its colder up there, that might be stereotype but Marlon is not one for the cold. He was on £25K a week at Watford, rising to £44K a week if we got promoted (£2.5M a year) which to be honest for a club who couldnt fill the ground in some Prem games last year is an outrageous sum. Wigan will pay him £40K a week now, so he will benefit the extra £15K a week for next few months, but that now makes him Wigans highest paid player, higher than Heskey who plays for England, will this cause him politics at Wigan, new boy from championship on more than us. Plus Wigan possibly / probably will still go down, i cant see them being able to pay that sort of wages in Championship, unless Dave Whelan bank rolls it, he has stated the club must be self financing, so a chance watford and wigan swap places, then Marlon back on £25K a week, up north, cold, away from Boxmoor, back in Championship, in front of 9000 fans a week, cos thats all wigan got in championship (home fans), so moral of this story, short term gain MAY lead to long term pain, and we arent just talking his knee.

My belief is if Wigan were the only club to come in for him this summer, he wouldnt of moved, but thanks to Fulham, this has happened !!!!

I confess I haven't been to a live match anywhere for well over 30 years. I began to lose interest when money took over and thick yobs who can barely write their own name on a contract began to earn far more in a week than a nurse, fireman, ambulancemen and other vital members of society earn in a year. Not to mention the avaricious men in grey suits interested only in taking every penny they can get out of the game, plus the bent and crooked agents taking from both sides. I enjoyed football far more when modest little clubs like Derby County and Nottingham Forest could win the league (and Forest even take two European Cups) under the incomparable Cloughie. Even Ipswich were champions one year I seem to recall. Now that it's down to the Big Four, with only occasionally one or two others getting a look in, I find it extremely boring. The old First Division was always far better when any one of a dozen clubs were in with a chance.
However, my point about Marlon King was, how on earth can you describe as a legend a kid who's only been in the game about 5 minutes and done virtually nothing as yet? Maybe he'll play for England one day? When he's played as many international games as Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore did, then let's start talking about a legend and not before!

To all those abused and criticised the Watford Observer, and in particular Kevin Affleck, just a request for a response to these comments after Watford sold King to Wigan for an initial £3m (not £5m), rising to £4m (not £5m) if he makes certain numbers of appearances and Wigan stay up.

The comments I refer to are:

"There was a hitch in the deal regarding his knee, and that has been taken into consideration."

More Affleck rumours? More unsubstantiated rubbish?

Nope, the words of Graham Simpson.

So, to all those who slagged KA so mercilessly, even calling for him to publicly apologise for his story - and even to be sacked . . .

. . . how about you lot apologise?

I doubt it.
