Harrow Council’s planning committee will be faced with a 36-name petition when they assess an application this evening for a new building in a metro land street.

Planning officers recommend it approves the proposals, which would see a new two-storey house in Cavendish Avenue, Sudbury Hill.

The site has been out of use for some time, and the planning report notes that the new house will “largely mirror” a neighbouring property.

But those opposed to the plans argue that it will be “out of character” with the rest of the road and are disappointed by ambitions to introduce a basement.

The council received six letters of objection – as well as the petition – despite only contacting four households.

Objectors said there is “no precedent” of a basement in Cavendish Avenue and that the new property should match the style of the pre-existing house to maintain the 1930s-style of the road.

The report said the impact on the street’s character would be “satisfactory” and would not be “detrimental” to neighbouring homes.

Responding to concerns that the property will be turned into a house in multiple occupation (HMO), officers pointed out that this would need to be judged as a separate planning application.

As well as the Cavendish Avenue project, the committee will discuss plans to turn a row of garages into four new flats in Stanmore and the proposed creation of a care home at what is currently a residential building in Pinner.
