A music school off a busy high street will make way for 21 new homes – though none will be affordable.

Brent Council’s planning committee approved proposals to convert the private school in Dyne Road, Kilburn.

The decision was not unanimous; deputy chairman Cllr Robert Johnson voted against the plans based on the lack of affordable homes.

He also questioned whether it might be better to demolish and rebuild as opposed to developing the current building, but the applicant assured the committee that working within the current envelope was “more favourable”.

Planning officers at the council pointed out that a section 106 is in place, including a £33,000 contribution towards a local carbon off-setting scheme.

They added that 24 per cent of the flats will be suitable for families, which is just one per cent short of the borough’s target.

And any concerns over the future of the music school were eased as the report noted that it will be moving slightly down the road.
