Harrow’s central depot will undergo further redevelopments to maximise its income.

The council’s cabinet approved the decision after it agreed that there was an “opportunity” to bring more money in if the development scheme was expanded.

In April 2017, the council agreed to devote £24.2 million spread over three years to the project.

The costs, it explained, would be met through savings associated with the redevelopment scheme, which were included in the budget.

But the extra costs of the extension, which will include a further increase in floor space, were not disclosed at the cabinet meeting under confidentiality laws.

The report showed stated that these costs, including any additional running costs, will be met through the extra income generated.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, responsible for the environment at Harrow Council, said the expansion would provide the local authority with the “flexibility” to secure this money.

And Cllr Keith Ferry, responsible for regeneration and planning at the council, noted that it is a scheme “in our own borough, under our control”.

Cllr Graham Henson, leader of the council, was impressed by how quickly the decision was made and said it highlighted the efficiency of those working on the project.

There will be several services at the new depot, including extra office space, minibus parking and an HGV MOT centre.
