Brent Council is set to adopt a new approach to electric car charging as it looks to improve the borough’s environment.

Cabinet councillors quickly agreed to adopt a report outlined by Cllr Krupa Sheth, which will result in charging points on residential streets.

The council had previously intended to follow a joint venture with Transport for London (TfL) and the Crown Commercial Services to procure the ‘lamp columns’.

But after a review, which pointed out that the local authority could stand to lose money during the project, it will now follow a framework solely devised by TfL.

It was noted that, while the change is significant, the most important aspect is that Brent will soon have electric car charging points for residents.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “We are working with the Mayor of London to improve air quality in the capital.

“I think this will have a major impact and it underlines our commitment to improving the environment in Brent.”

The initial decision, which was taken earlier this year, came after 50 people made requests for on-street charging points.

TfL’s framework is scheduled to be announced in July, though the council has the authority to look for an alternative route if there is a delay.

The bulk of the funding for the project – 75 per cent – comes from London’s Go Ultra Low Cities Scheme.

The council is contributing £50,000 from Section 106 agreements with developers, Neighbourhood CIL and a TfL budget.
