Two vital safety events by a charity group are available to parents to guard their children against unnecessary accidents on the road and in the home.

April 23 marks the start of Family Safety Week in Harrow, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is offering two safety sessions to parents in conjunction with the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

Today, RoSPA’s road safety manger, Nick Lloyd will join healthcare professionals at the Caryl Thomas Clinic on Headstone Drive, to ensure parents receive sound advice on child car seats.

While on April 25 the charity will offer a more general child safety session to young families at the baby weighing clinic at Cedars Children’s Centre on Whittlesea Road.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says one child under five dies in an accident each week with most life-changing accidents occurring in the home.

They added, Family Safety Week will highlight the “little, simple things” parents can do as preventative measures.

Throughout the week (April 23 - 27) the charity will offer a range of other advice on matters such as household poisons, choking, falls, and incidents at bath time such as drowning and scalds, and bedtime such as strangulation.

RoSPA’s campaign project manager, Helen Halls, said: “Many people feel comfortable and let their guard down in their own home, which is why that’s where the majority of really serious accidents happen.

“Young children are particularly vulnerable as they are starting to explore the world, but don’t yet appreciate the risks and dangers.

“There are lots of small things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones, which is what we want to promote this Family Safety Week.”
