Brent Council said it will continue to crack down on newsagents selling alcohol to under 18s after a Wembley shop was fined £2,000.

A 15-year-old boy, accompanied by a 14-year-old, managed to buy a bottle of WKD from Green Planet Services Ltd – trading as Buy2Save – in Carlyon Road.

The pair were taking part in a trading standards operation, which is seeking to reduce the sale of alcohol in Brent to those who are underage.

Simon Legg, senior regulatory service manager at Brent Council, said: “We are pleased with the result and it shows how serious the Magistrates are about the sale of alcohol to children.

“While it was only one bottle of WKD that was sold, it does not take away from the seriousness of this offence and there is no excuse for this business not doing anything to challenge the children.

“The law is there for a reason and licenced premises have a duty to ensure that young people are prevented from accessing alcohol, at a time when they are still developing and are still vulnerable.”

Willesden Magistrates Court heard that the seller, who is currently a student, had no documented training and did not usually work in the shop.

Neither of the boys were challenged on their age, nor were they asked to provide any ID.

The company was fined £1,000 by the court, as well as being ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge and £953.29 in costs.

Brent Council added that businesses wanting help and support complying with underage sales law should email trading.standards@brent.gov.uk or call 03454 04 05 06.
