Students from a college scooped a top prize for completing a nine-week project aimed at encouraging more young people to support a major charity against poverty.

Harrow College students were among pupils from four colleges challenged with designing an online solution to engage more 16-24-year-olds with Comic Relief.

The finale was at Amazon’s central London offices on March 14, following a brief in January.

Students first pitched their ideas at the end of last year and of the three, ‘Think Feel Do’, ‘Red Hand Print’ and a ‘Malaria application’, were chosen.

As well as finding a solution, pupils also had to cost and plan their projects.

The initiative was run by the Career Colleges Trust in partnership with Amazon and the Comic Relief charity.

Teams of 16-19-year-olds from Harrow College, Barking & Dagenham, BMet and Westminster Kingsway Colleges met for the final at Amazon’s central London offices to present their solutions to a panel of judges.

The panel comprised members from Amazon, Comic relief and Careers Colleges Trust.

Harrow College students won a joint prize for “Best Solution” with BMet College, and Barking & Dagenham College won overall receiving £50 of vouchers from Amazon.

Other winners were awarded certificates and Comic Relief goody bags.

Digital lead for the Career Colleges Trust, Julia Von Klonowski, said: “Taking part in a live project with one of the world’s biggest digital companies is a unique opportunity.

“Students have not only developed their team-working and digital skills but they have also gained first-hand insight into this extremely exciting industry.”

Each student had to talk about what they had learned during the project and the areas they had found challenging and enjoyed.

Many expressed a boost in their confidence and that time management was an area for improvement.
