A candle fire destroyed the downstairs of a house and part of the first floor.
Fire services were called to Christchurch Avenue in Harrow at 9.35am on March 22 to tackle the blaze.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters were in attendance.

The owner was woken up by the smoke alarm before calling emergency services. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The fire is believed to have been started by a candle from a religious shrine.

The fire was under control by 10.24am but by then most of the ground floor was destroyed.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade, said: "Candles, incense and oil burners are one of the biggest causes of fire within homes.

“Fortunately, this house was fitted with working smoke alarms which raised the alarm…but there could have been a very different outcome."
