A man was “disgusted” to discover a ‘live insect’ inside his loaf of bread as he prepared to eat his lunch.

Vishal Shah, from Pinner, had bought the loaf of Warburtons seeded bread from a Tesco in West Harrow on his way to work.

But as he got ready to make his lunch, he noticed something moving beneath the plastic wrapping.

“At first I thought it was a seed as some of them were loose but, when I looked closer, I noticed that it was some sort of fly,” he said.

“I want people to know in case something similar happens to them. But what can you do except check everything you buy?”

Mr Shah said the incident has had such a negative impact that he has sworn off Warburtons products for good.

“I will never be buying their products again, that’s for sure – none of my family will be eating Warburtons in the future,” he said.

The baking firm confirmed that it was liaising with Mr Shah and the bread will be checked by “experts” as part of the investigation.

A spokesperson said: “At Warburtons, product safety and quality is of the highest importance.

“Our food safety standards are regularly audited and are classified as excellent so this is an unusual situation.”

Mr Shah, who works in North Wembley, said he is “s***t-scared” of eating seeded bread again in case something similar happens.

He explained how the incident has left him with “a bit of a phobia” and he will take extra precautions when shopping from now on.

“I’m not sure what to do; perhaps I can check in the bakery and only buy bread from the store?” he said.

“Maybe I will have to switch to white. It might not be as healthy but at least you can see what’s in there clearly. Or maybe I will have to start making my own bread.”

A spokesperson for Tesco explained that, since these products arrive at their stores pre-packaged, the manufacturer would be best to comment on the matter.

It is the second recent incident of Harrow residents coming across unwanted surprises in their food.

Earlier this month, a family found staples lodged in their curry after ordering from Everest Spice – The Honeypot in Stanmore.
