Roads by a busy hospital were brought to a standstill after a burst water pipe led to widespread flooding.

The faulty main, located near Northwick Park Hospital in Watford Road, Harrow, resulted in severe traffic disruption on January 16 as emergency services attended the incident.

Streams of water at depths of up to a foot saw the road resemble a river as it was closed in both directions, with drivers urged to avoid the area at all costs.

Affinity Water, which is responsible for the main, explained how a technician was investigating the incident having been called at around 8am.

It added: “During this time we ask you not to use any electrical appliances that require a water supply, for example washing machines or dishwashers and to conserve water from storage tanks during the time your water supply is interrupted.

“If you do still have a supply, we would advise you to store some water for drinking, in case your water has to be switched off for a repair to be completed.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and aim to restore your supply to normal as soon as possible.”

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters from Wembley, Stanmore and Harrow stations were called for assistance.

A spokesperson from London Fire Brigade said: “Fire crews are working with the police to minimise the impact of the flooding.

“The closure of the road is causing traffic issues in the local area. If you are travelling to Northwick Park Hospital this morning, please allow extra time as journeys will take longer than usual.”

Northwick Park Hospital said it remains open in spite of the flooding, including its multi-storey car park, but advised people to allow extra time if visiting and to take extra care while on site.
