The new interim chief executive of Harrow Council has lent his support to a free workshop aimed at improving mental health in the borough.

Tom Whiting, who recently took over from Michael Lockwood, wants people to get involved with the Thrive LDN programme, which encourages openness when it comes to mental health.

The goal is to make people feel happier “all year round” by looking at how they can take the lead in assessing their mental health and tackling any issues that come up.

Mr Whiting said: “The first steps towards mental wellbeing are openness and conversation.

“We want everyone to feel able to speak up if they are having problems – whether it’s to their boss, a teacher or co-worker – and get the help they need.

“By bringing people together to share their views and needs, we can ensure everyone knows where to turn and that employers and community leaders are supported to help make this happen.”

Harrow Council launched the first localised Thrive campaign last year as it brought together the public sector, businesses and the community to commit to improving mental wellbeing.

It is part of a larger, citywide campaign supported by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, which focuses on six key aspirations.

These are providing services for when they are needed, giving support to children and young people, ending discrimination and stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging a positive, productive workforce, giving power to individuals and communities and targeting suicide prevention.

Cllr Kareema Marikar, Deputy Mayor of Harrow, said: “Mental illness affects more than 50,000 people every year in Harrow alone.

“It costs society billions in lost working days and productivity. So it’s in the interest of everyone to work together to make Harrow happier – that’s what our event is about.”

The free Thrive LDN workshop takes place on January 31 from 4pm to 6.30pm in the members’ lounge at Harrow Civic Centre in Station Road. Refreshments will be provided.
