A rogue trader has been fined for peddling fake toys from a film which hasn’t even been made.

Namilini Moorthy, 48, shop director at Multie Choice, in Streatfield Road, Harrow, has been sent a bill for £2,000 for selling a host of dodgy goods.

Trading Standards officers noticed that her shop was offering Buzz Lightyear toys from Toy Story 4 – a film that is set to be released in 2019.

Further checks at the shop found that there were more than 1,000 knock-off toys and games up for sale.

Moorthy claimed that she’d inherited some stock from the shop’s previous owner and unsuspectedly brought other fakes from a mysterious visitor some months before, who left without leaving a name, address or any documents.

Graham Henson, responsible for environment, crime and community safety at Harrow Council, said the fake goods had the potential to be dangerous.

He said: “This irresponsible shop owner thought she could play around with children’s safety.

“Now we’ve confiscated her toys and she’s lucky not to get a detention. This is a toy story that I never want to see again in Harrow.”

Simon Legg, manager of Brent and Harrow Trading Standards, reminded business owners to double check that merchandise is legitimate to sell.

He also advised that they check the box to make sure what they relate to is a real thing.
