A volunteer has been recognised for his sterling work in improving parks and green spaces.

Eugene Callinan, park warden at Kenton Recreation Ground and an ambassador for the Harrow Parks group, received the British Empire Medal for his contribution to the community.

He has worked on maintaining the area for 17 years and continues to work tirelessly in serving those who use it.

He explained how he loves what he does and has always held a passion for parks and the power they have on improving a region.

“It feels very nice indeed to be appreciated for the many years of work, though I must add that I do enjoy doing this work,” he said.

“It really is a team effort; the work of many hands and minds. I hope that it will encourage others to come and take part in our various projects in the future.

“I’ve been lucky enough to do this over the years, it’s my passion and I know how parks can bring the community together.”

He added that the next thing on his ‘to do list’ is to refurbish the old Kenton Bowling Club with the aim of opening it up for people suffering with dementia and other disabilities.

“It’s important for people who have dementia to be able to take part in an activity, as it keeps their minds and bodies active,” he explained.

“This will give them a chance to take up a nice, simple sport in lovely surroundings and I hope we can get as many people as possible involved.”

Eugene noted how the atmosphere around the project is “extremely exciting” and he paid tribute to those who have supported him, and continue to do so, in his work.
