A leisure centre is celebrating its 50th anniversary by offering free activities and the chance to meet an Olympic gold medallist.

Bannister Sports Centre, in Harrow, named after the famous athlete who became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, opened on 24 September 1967.

To celebrate half a century of existence, it is inviting the community to come and enjoy a day of free, family activities at its location in Uxbridge Road.

Great Britain and England hockey star Alex Danson, who was part of the team that took gold at last year at the Rio Olympics, will be joining in with the celebrations.

Ameesha Mistry, general manager at Everyone Active, which runs the facility on behalf of Harrow Council, explained how the success of the centre highlighted the value of leisure, fitness and activity in the community.

Cllr Sue Anderson, responsible for community and culture at Harrow Council, added that she was eagerly looking forward to the celebrations.

She said: “The Bannister Sports Centre is not just a place for people to work out, it’s a place that really brings the community together – whether it’s for your child’s birthday party, to make some new friends or to take some time out.

“Their 50th anniversary is a fantastic achievement and what better way to celebrate than with Gold medal winning GB Hockey Olympian, Alex Danson.”

The day will include a range of activities such as group exercise classes, martial arts taster sessions, athletics and games.

Younger members of the community will be able to enjoy the bouncy castle and have their face painted.

There will be a raffle with an optional suggested donation of £2. All donations from the raffle will go to MIND, a charity formed to help those with mental health issues.

The open day runs from 10am to 3pm on September 24 at Bannister Sports Centre. For more information call 020 842 7931 or visit www.everyoneactive.com
