A flowerbed was cleared after a video of rats teeming around rubbish bags made the national news – but people are still concerned about “monster” rodents lurking in other areas.

A passer-by posted a video on the #Fixit Harrow Network Facebook group on Friday, which showed several rats darting around the shrubs in Greenhill Way, Harrow on-the-Hill.

The footage was featured on BBC London News, which prompted Harrow Council’s clean team to clean up the rubbish and set traps.

But many fear rats are becoming a borough-wide problem.

Terry O’Grady, of Christchurch Gardens, Wealdstone, believes the streets need to be cleaned more regularly.

The 65-year-old said: “Finally the problem with rats has reached national news, but the ones shown were small compared to the monsters living in Wealdstone.

“Putting poison and traps down isn’t the answer. The council needs to clean the streets instead of just regenerating the area with Tower Blocks and thousands of flats.”

Anna Cox has also seen rats in her garden in Corfe Avenue, South Harrow.

She said: “One evening when standing on my patio waiting for my dog to come in, a huge rat ran across the patio inches from my feet.”

Cllr Graham Henson, cabinet member for environment, said the council takes reports of rats “extremely seriously”.

He said: “If you see a rat or suspect you know where rats are living, please report it to us at harrow.gov.uk/environment.

“If you find rats in your property, you should contact a pest control expert urgently. The Council offers a service – email pest.control@harrow.gov.uk or call 0208 424 7666.“
