A community group has promised that an upcoming fun day will be a throwback to the days of old with a wide range of events planned for all the family.

Friends of Canons Park, which organises an annual Kids’ Fun Fair Day, admitted that, in recent years, things have been slightly “pared down” but, on this occasion, the festival will be “returning to its roots”.

A children's fun fair will be the central attraction at the park, while activity classes and a host of food stalls, including one offering homemade fudge, are sure keep everyone happy.

For those who prefer a slower pace, there will be a free yoga session catering for all abilities in the George V Memorial Garden from 2-4pm as well as a fascinating ‘Herb Walk’ by Varsha of Vanaspati at 4pm.

Claudia Merrick’s ‘Storytelling Walk’ – a gentle stroll incorporating tales based on the history of the park – starts at 2pm and promises to cater for “kids and adults alike”.

The Friends are continuing to improve the walled George V Memorial Garden in the centre of the park by planting new bulbs and shrubs.

They hope to maintain their gardening tasks by using funds from another special event at the Fun Fair Day – a light-hearted ‘dog contest’.

Here visitors will be able to enter their beloved pets into a number of categories including ‘Friendliest dog’ and ‘Dog with the waggiest tail’. Proceeds from the competition will go towards the work of the Friends.

They would also like to draw attention to the St Lawrence Church, situated next to the Whitchurch Lane entrance to the park.

For anyone with an interest in local history, they can join a free tour from 2-4pm every Sunday and learn about its connection to the First Duke of Chandos – one of the richest men in 18th century Britain.

The Kids’ Fun Fair Day is free to enter and runs from 11am-6pm on 6 August.
