A heroic dog died from smoke inhalation after saving the lives of her pregnant owner and other people during a blaze in a block of flats.

More than 70 fire fighters were called to Kay's Supermarket, in Princes Parade, Golders Green Road, Golders Green, yesterday morning at 7.32am.

Crews from Hendon, West Hampstead, Finchley and Mill Hill fire stations were unable to put out the day long fire and it spread to nearby homes in Heather Gardens.

A man who lived in one of the flats was awoken by his pet dog Daisy as “toxic” smoke filled the room that he and his pregnant girlfriend were sleeping in.

They quickly realised there was a fire a few doors away and alerted other people living in the block of flats to escape the dangerous fumes.

Unfortunately, Daisy tragically died in the blaze and was carried out of the building cradled in the arms of a fire fighter.

A Go Fund Me page has now been set up for those who lost their homes and possessions in the fire, which is still being tackled by emergency services.
