Campaigners are calling for a 20 mile per hour speed limit along a road over fears that speeding cars will put children’s lives at risk.

Tasha Procter of Windsor Road, Harrow Weald, has begun a petition to reduce the speed limit along Cecil Road, Wealdstone, which so far has 32 signatures.

She says that part of the road now has a 20mph limit, but she wants the whole road to be reduced to increase safety – particularly as students from nearby Whitefriars School, in Whitefriars Avenue, often walk to and from school.

She said: “Many residents have called upon Harrow Council to introduce this limit for the whole of Cecil Road so it can be safe for everyone ".

Wealdstone Labour councillor Phillip O'Dell also hopes a 20 mile speed will reduce the risk of children being “knocked over”.

He said: “It is important issue, as parents want their children to be safe.

“Congestion and speeding are also big issues, especially as traffic is increasing in this road.

“Some of the road is still 30mph, but we want it to be lower than this, as it could be dangerous for children if they want to play out in the street at weekends or evenings.

“With a reduced speed limit, there will be a lesser chance of people getting knocked over.”

Masooma Sarwar, a Harrow Council spokesperson, said a new speed limit will be considered over the next year.

She said: “We will consider extending the existing 20 mph zone to include the whole of Cecil Road within the next financial year as part of the programme funded by TfL.”
