A man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after a 60-year-old cyclist was killed in a car crash.

Mishal Alshammary, of Crest Road, Brent, was given a four-month jail sentence, which was suspended for a year, at the Old Bailey yesterday (Thursday, May 4).

The 33-year-old was also given a 300-hour community order, disqualified from driving for 15 months and ordered to take an extended driving test afterwards.

Alshammary previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at the Old Bailey on Monday, 27 February.

Police were called to Forward Drive, in Harrow at 12.04am on June 21, 2015 by the London Ambulance Service, where they found a 60-year-old man suffering from serious head injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.03am and was later identified as Clifton James, who lived just round the corner from the scene in Cullington Close.

The court heard how Mr Clifton was hit by Alshammary at the roundabout where Forward Drive meets Christchurch Avenue as he was cycling home.

Alshammary failed to see the cyclist as he drove straight over the roundabout in his Ford S Max and knocked Clifton off his bike.

Alshammary stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was taken to a north London police station and was later bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Cheryl Frost, from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a tragic incident where a much-loved family man had his life taken from him just a few minutes away from his home.

"Alshammary's reckless driving cost the life of an innocent man and changed his family's lives for ever.

"I would like to take this opportunity to urge motorists to take care whilst driving and always be on the lookout for cyclists."
