Harrow Liberal Democrats say they “welcome” the sacking of a Bradford East general election candidate due to his “slurs against the Jewish community”.

Lib Dem leader Tim Farron denounced former MP David Ward as “unfit to represent the party” on Wednesday. April 26.

Concerns were raised during Prime Minister's Questions after Prime Minister Theresa May brought up Mr Ward’s "questionable record on antisemitism".

He was first accused of anti-Semitism in 2013 when he compared the treatment of Palestinians by ‘Jews’ to the Holocaust.

He was then suspended later that year for questioning the continued existence of the ‘apartheid’ state of Israel.

Mr Ward also had to apologise in 2014 for claiming he might be ready to fire rockets from Gaza into Israel.

He was put forward as Lib Dem candidate for Bradford East in 2015 but lost the seat, which he had held since 2010.

He will now be unable to stand in the General Election on June 8.

Adam Bernard, the Lib Dem candidate for Harrow East said he was “glad that Tim Farron acted decisively”.

He said: "David Ward's repeated and inappropriate slurs against the Jewish community have no place in a party that prides itself on inclusivity and tolerance.

“I want Britain to be a welcoming place for people of all communities and all faiths, and I am glad that Tim Farron acted decisively."

Marisha Ray, the vice-chair of the Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats and candidate for Chipping Barnet added: "Antisemitism is racism. There's no place for it in our party of equality, fairness and justice.

“As vice-chair of Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats, I campaign for race equality and I have taken up many concerns from many different communities with the party leader today.

“People of various faiths or of none have expressed their shock to me. I am pleased that Tim Farron has taken action swiftly."
