A young woman was killed after a car overturned in an early morning crash on the A3 near Esher.

Surrey Police have confirmed that a woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the car, died of her injuries.

She was taken by air ambulance to St George's Hospital in Tooting with head, thorax and abdonmen injuries. 

The male driver of the car, also in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody. He was treated for minor injuries at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey. 

Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses after the silver Peugeot, travelling northbound, crashed into the central reservation and overturned on the A3 near to Esher Common at 1.20am this morning. 

The northbound carriageway was closed for several hours as police worked to recover the vehicle.

The road was re-opened at 7.15am.
