Commuters, rejoice!

Work on step-free access in the borough will begin.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced today that Harrow-on-the-Hill station will be made step-free as part of a £200m investment into London Underground.

The station, alongside Newbury Park Station in Redbridge, is first in line for this long awaited change.

Labour AM for Brent and Harrow, Navin Shah AM, welcomes the Mayor’s “early Christmas present" from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, after former mayor Boris Johnson halted the plans, sparking frustration from campaigners.

Mr Shah said: “Local residents and community groups such as Harrow Association of Disabled People, Harrow Mencap and Age UK-Harrow have been campaigning to improve accessibility at this station for at least 10 years.

"This win is going to make life easier for many residents, including parents with prams and those with disabilities. I would also like to thank everyone that was involved in this campaign, including councillors and the local MP. Step-free access will play a major part in Harrow’s plans for regeneration."

Harrow-on-the-Hill station access discussed by deputy mayor for transport Val Shawcross

Campaigners lobbying for better transport access in Harrow will be pleased to hear their concerns were discussed with the deputy mayor for transport when she visited the borough on Friday.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “As part of making London’s transport system one of the very best in the world we must ensure it is accessible for all Londoners.

"It’s simply not right that for people with disabilities, parents with young children and many older people, many of our stations are still very difficult to use.

“We’re also announcing plans to bring forward the delivery of step-free access at outer London stations at Harrow on the Hill and Newbury Park.

"Work is now set to get underway at these busy stations next year.”
