A three-day siege between armed police and a man who had barricaded himself in his home surrounded by petrol has been brought to a “safe conclusion”.

Police arrived at the property on Wood End Lane, Northolt, at around 1am on Friday morning after receiving reports of a man in possession of a large quantity of “hazardous items”.

The man has been named locally as 46-year-old Jason Matthews, a former pupil of Northolt High School.

It is thought Matthews has severe mental health issues, and that he owns four large Rottweiler dogs, compounding the police's cautious approach.

However at around 8.10pm tonight (Sunday), police confirmed they had forced entry to the address and safely detained the man.

Met Police could not confirm whether he had been arrested. This information is expected shortly.

A full search is now taking place of the address to ensure that the area is safe so local residents can return to their homes as quickly as possible.

Around 80 residents living nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

Chief Superintendent Paul Martin, in charge of policing in Ealing, said: “I am really pleased that this incident has now ended, and importantly ended without anyone coming to harm. Our key priority throughout this was to get the man out of the address safely as we had growing concerns about his well-being and believed him to be in crisis.

“After attempts to negotiate over a number of days did not work we used specialist officers to work out how we could gain entry to the address as safely as we could. They did that this evening.

“I would like to thank all the local residents, especially those who were hugely disrupted by not being able to return to their homes, for their patience and cooperation. We are continuing to search the property in North End Lane, which we are doing as quickly as can to make sure people get home.”
