The “crazy life” of harrow born Sir Elton John is to be revealed in a new autobiography.

The 69-year-old lifelong Hornets fan and honourary president of the club – a role he shares with Watford great Graham Taylor – has already started writing his memoirs, on which he will also work with music writer and critic Alex Petridis.

Sir Elton first become club chairman in 1976, declaring an ambition to take the team into what was then the First Division from its position in the doldrums of the Fourth Division.

He owned the club in two stints; from 1976 and 1987, and then 1997 until 2002.

In honour of the singer, a new stand 3,500 seat stand was opened on Boxing Day 2014, named The Elton John Stand. It is likely his time at the club will feature prominently in the book.

Sir Elton said he is finding the process of writing about his "roller coaster ride" of a life "cathartic", despite not being one to look back into the past.

"I'm not prone to being a nostalgic person. I'm often accused of only looking forward to my next gig or creative project,” he said.

"It's come as quite a surprise how cathartic I am finding the process of writing my memoirs. As I look back, I realise what a crazy life I have had the extreme privilege of living.”

Sir Elton added: "I have grown up in a period of extraordinary change in our world - and have had the joyful honour of rubbing shoulders and working with so many of the people at the heart of these changes.

"My life has been one hell of a roller coaster ride and it's still lumbering on. I hope readers will enjoy the ride too."

Publishers Pan Macmillan and its sister company Henry Holt have confirmed they will be releasing the musician's memoir in 2019 after they jointly acquired the rights to publish.

Anthony Forbes Watson, Pan Macmillan managing director, said: "Sir Elton's life transcends classification and his wildly readable, deeply human story will speak to anyone and everyone, everywhere."

British singer-songwriter Sir Elton has enjoyed a successful career that has spanned five decades, during which time he has won five Grammy Awards and an Academy Award.

He has released more than 40 albums, including studio albums and soundtracks, with some of his most famous tracks including Rocket Man, I'm Still Standing and Tiny Dancer.

Sir Elton is married to Canadian filmmaker and producer David Furnish and the pair have two sons; Zachary Jackson Levon and Elijah Joseph Daniel.
